Assault Course Invite – Weds 10th Aug

All members are invited to do an assault course challenge at the eclipse centre in blackwater on Wednesday 10 August at 4.00. Please send thos a text or call on 0877437002 if you want to participate. Please spread the word by text. It is likely that there will be a film crew there for nationwide so bring some of our Tri kit, hoody t shirt, etc. I know this is short notice and I realise it won’t suit everybody but if you can make it I’m sure it will be great fun.

Thanks,

Thos

New this year is the construction of The Eclipse Assault Course. This is one of only a very few privately owned courses in the country. This course is ‘rustic and tough’ and designed to condition and test the endurance of visitors who seek the thrill of ‘challenge’ both to their abilities as individuals and as leaders.

Course delivers many benefits for participating individuals and teams that includes:
Total Body Toning: Every muscle group is worked when tackling the assault course whilst enhancing balance and co-ordination.
Builds strength, speed and endurance: The variation of physical challenges help to develop a more balanced, stronger team player.
Builds leadership: by enriching the qualities needed for any winning team.
Team Bonding: Close encounters with the challenge course inspires direction and focus for team development.
Team Building: The team have to and rely on each other to work as a unit to complete the course. This transforms directly on to the sporting field.
Confidence Building: The ability to self-motivate and give confidence to other team members towards a common goal promotes team confidence to overcome competitive adversity.
A great outdoor alternative: that helps prevent boredom in the gym and provides a refreshing change to just running around the pitch! This helps teams get focussed, tuned in and enthusiastic to train.
Ideal for sports clubs: The Eclipse Assault Course is an ideal way to break the train-match-train-match cycle and is great fun for any time of the year.

July Newsletter Update

Hi, a quick members update for July just to remind you of a few things coming up.

Little Bo Peep Closing Soon!
So after a slow start the entries for the Little Bo Peep have been flooding in of late. Anybody who is still looking for an entry get in quick as there are limited places available and closing date for entries is July 31st. See here for details. For those who have already entered the Race Briefing has now been uploaded. Don’t forget if you are relying on a One Day License this must be purchased in advance from Triathlon Ireland.

Once again we are giving a free entry to any fully paid up member of Kenmare Tri Club (this also includes relay teams if one of the team is a member ) However this year we require all member to use the on line booking system and PAY in advance. Your entry will be refunded in full AFTER the event to insure you have met the agreed requirements ie Two marshals on the day . This also makes the managing of the entries much easier on the club .Cost of entries are Single €60 Relay €99. Sinead Ni Neill is the race director this year and all names of marshals must go through her.

Club Gear
The latest club gear has arrived in time this year and we will be updating the site with full details shortly. Gear that we now have includes bib shorts, cycle tops, vests, tri suits, rain jacket and cycle jackets. These will be available for sale to members at 50% off making them the best value gear around!

Training
Training is well underway and the Swims on Wed & Fri evening at 6:15 in Star Outdoors have been the suprise hit of the summer. Running (long) is still leaving from the Pier every Tuesday at 5:45PM. Running will also be starting back up on Sunday morning from the Pier at 10AM. Cycling has become a bit ad-hoc but most longer cycles are being posted to the website. If you would like to ask about any training that may be coming up don’t hesitate to contact us on info@kenmaretri.com (or even suggest some and gather a crowd).

Bits and Bobs

Finally a huge congratulations to Lisa & Ellen who completed the Ironman Austria in July with ease! Well done and no doubt the first of many :)

Also the best of luck to two others, Colm & Jim who are both going off to become Ironmen themselves (or a multi-Ironman in Colm’s case) in the coming weeks.

We do want your feedback on the club and events. What works for you, what doesn’t and what you might like to see added or to get help with. Contact info@kenmaretri.com will any and all thoughts, comments and suggestions.

Westport Tri Race Report

8.05 a.m.
Westport
My car is parked on the dockside in the shadow of a tall, decrepit looking building that may once have been a mill or a warehouse or something. Rain hammers on the windscreen. If Martin Scorsese did triathlons, they would look like this. Race briefing is in five minutes and, still not in my wetsuit, it’s the first time in a short and unillustrious career as a triathlete that I’m thinking of giving it a miss.

This was supposed to be the perfect triathlon: a roadtrip with the wife and daughter to visit old friends in Westport and a sprint triathlon on a Saturday morning in July thrown in for good measure. And then my poor daughter broke her arm. So, I found myself leaving Kenmare on the Friday night, facing the long journey north alone. Arriving just before midnight, I fell asleep hoping against hope that the weather forecast was wrong.

It wasn’t.

I open the car door, step out into the wind and rain, mutter my way into the wetsuit and arrive late for the briefing. We’re sent shuffling along the dock to the steps down which we must all descend to the water. Standing there shivering, waiting our turn, we must look like some band of rubber-clad penitents.

The sea water feels balmy – it’s all relative I suppose – and when the horn sounds we all do what we’re here to do. The swim is fun: choppy water but a tide behind us and no sighting worries when the orders are to swim down to the end of the pier and back up the other side. As usual, when I reach transition, there are very few other bikes to get in my way and, after nearly catching pneumonia in similar conditions last month in Sneem, I stick on a few extra layers for the cycle.

Off out the road west into the teeth of a stiff breeze. Is that Croagh Patrick behind a wall of grey cloud? If so, it’ll be quite the scenic ride when our summer arrives. At least the wind’s behind us after the turnaround.

The run through Westport House is picturesque and we even get a gravel path for part of it.

After crossing the line, I’m pleasantly surprised when the man sheltering in the van gives me a time just under 1.40. My hosts Gina and Stevie serve me a wonderful post-race brunch and, after a power nap, I feel sufficiently recovered to strike out for Kenmare.

I return home just inside the 24 hour mark. 210 miles, 750 metres, 20 kms, 5 kms, 210 miles, wind, rain, possibly even some hail. Worth it? Every inch – but could we please have some sun for the next one?

TJ
